Ok, this title is not original, I just saw the phrase on Julie
Gichuru’s twitter account and thought it makes lots of sense and so here I am
trying to ruin a perfectly great phrase by adding my thoughts(never mind that
my thoughts are the sum total of the little knowledge I have managed to acquire
over my brief lifetime).
Still, the simple truths of life, me, notwithstanding jump
at you just like this one which is probably the thought of my day. I mean it’s
not what I think of my day but you know…………….anyway.
Whereas it is not generally categorized as a raw human need
or drive like feeding, belonging, and safety, the craving to be more than we
are, better than we are in our current state is probably the greatest human
need. Most of all our basic human needs can be satisfied by mere acquisition of
the desired commodity except the need to be more. We must work at being more. We
must invest and not just resources to be better. We must invest our-very-selves.
I guess that’s why the fellows who make those common sense books (some call
them self-help books) are making so much money by telling us the very same cliché facts we hear
from people around us day upon day. I mean, who doesn’t know that to get
anything done you must exert yourself? Who in the world doesn’t know that to
win or be the better man, you must put in an extra effort and that diligently?
It is after all one of the first lessons we learn as babies and we learn it
unconsciously. We diligently toddle and stumble and fall and rise and try again
and even enjoy the process of failing just so we can walk and without fail, nearly
all of us walk after a little more than a few tumbles. (So why exactly are the “matured
humans so immature with regard to failing?”)
The other side of it all though is a very unique need which
gives probably the most lasting satisfaction of all once met. A Satisfaction with life!!! This need
is the need to do something for someone else. Someone who is not you. Someone
you may not even know. This is the most important I think of our human needs
and the one need we all secretly hope we fulfill (even the meanest of us).
Whereas it is important to us that the things we do are recognized
or better yet that both our persons and achievements are recognized, I have a
quiet belief that we as humans are best fulfilled by the things we do for
others(to the salesmen I add, “for free”). We all want to see the smile that
represents satisfaction and thanksgiving on the faces of those we aid. We love
to know that the individual in question is more comfortable than when we first
met them.
For me that represents the fact that contrary to popular
belief especially among some “Christian” folk that humans are genetically bad
apples, humans are propagated in originality as good apples until you fill them
up with belief that they are bad apples( by the way, apples? Hhhhhhmmmm, apples
are not born by women they grow on trees in very specific geographical
locations. We don’t even grow them in my village)
Now, Just you try asking Idi Amin Dada if all he did was
hurt people and not try to help them. I know Hitler is a confirmed Lunatic who
was brainy enough to lead two of the most destructive wars ever fought for
prolonged periods successfully as the Leader of the failed aggressors( I hope I
understand this last sentence myself… he! he!) Actually took a few moments to
be good to a lucky select few. If only his loved ones. Osama Bin Laden is even
thought to be a martyr in a few circles meaning that he did something for God
but mind you he had a certain population in mind as he murdered innocent men,
women and children in cold blood. He ultimately did what he did with a twisted
belief that he would help improve the lives and freedoms of certain groups in
our world. He had a valid invalid need.
The ultimate success is to lend help to the needy and be
sure that they appreciate your little effort.
This assertion notwithstanding,
Me and you, You and I have one thing in common, we want more in terms of
success. We just have to face and correct one very flawed premise. “Success is not making it big” It is
not even “Preparation meeting opportunity”
which remind me to tell you is actually an incomplete formula to success
rather than its definition. Success is
having a mission and completing it by achieving the goals targeted. So when
I say I agree that “even the rich want to be successful,” I mean that they want
to be able to achieve targets period.
I wonder why I didn’t simply say so in the first place. Duh!
I am not a writer of self help project books. Nope! Do you ever read my blog
posts as though you are reading some self help crap agreeing to all the
nonsensical common sense in it? Think man. Think for yourself and let my naked
brain be.
Of course, everyone
wants to achieve their goals but we don’t all achieve all our goals. Ask the
most successful person what their success rate is. Yes, success is measured in
my world using a success rate that goes;
How many projects have
you undertaken? What were the aims of each? Did you achieve them all? Oh, of
course you human being which ones did you fail to reach total achievement in(100%)?
